Vascutherm 4The Vascutherm 4 is a light-weight mobile cooling and compression system used to prevent post-surgical pain, oedema, and venous thromboembolism (DVT). The Vascutherm 4 is unique and innovative in design and use. Due to its proprietary thermoelectric technology, ice is not required, and makes it a mess and hassle-free, plug and play solution for post-operative/post-injury recovery.
The Vascutherm 4 also effectively prevents deep vein thrombosis (DVT) through its ankle and foot pump compression wraps. |
DVT therapyDVT (deep vein thrombosis) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are preventable medical conditions; however, the health impact may be severe if this medical issue is missed. A DVT can occur when blood pools and a clot forms in the lower limb. Numerous effective preventative methods can significantly reduce the risk of DVT. Some of these methods include mechanical intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), pharmacotherapy, or combining these two approaches. The latter is currently considered the best practice in DVT prevention.
The risk of developing a DVT is the highest after orthopaedic (e.g. total joint replacement) and complex arthroscopic procedures. The Vascutherm 4 provides effective prevention against DVT development. |
Cold Therapy Surgery and sporting injury can cause soft tissue damage. This often begins the cascade of the inflammatory process. At the microscopic level, cell wall disruption occurs, leading to cell damage. A cell’s natural response to this kind of damage is the attempt to repair itself – a process, which is not sustainable. When cold therapy is applied, the temperature of the respective body part drops; thus, decreasing the fluid transport via vasoconstriction, which slows down the inflammatory response.
By decreasing the transportation of chemicals responsible for pain and swelling of the inflamed area, cold therapy reduces pain and swelling. Cold therapy, however, is effective only when performed as intended. Whereas cooling at a temperature too high is ineffective, cooling at a temperature too low can cause tissue damage. The Vascutherm 4 is one of the few ice-free devices available on the market that assures an adjustable and stable temperature, thus avoiding the risk of too low/high temperatures. The Vascutherm 4 is regulated to function between 6°C-10°C; therefore, minimising the risk of cold injury or ineffective cold therapy. The Vascutherm 4 provides an effective and safe continuous cold therapy. |
Compression therapy Compression increases the effectiveness of cold therapy by stabilising the therapy wrap contact with the skin. Compression therapy also decreases the excess fluid collected in injured soft tissues. The reduction of blood flow and swelling due to compression therapy minimises swelling and post-surgical pain.
Overall, the combination of cold and compression therapy is beneficial for patients who undergo orthopaedic surgery. Numerous randomised controlled trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of compression and cold therapy combination. Effectiveness has been measured by the reduction in the Visual Analogue Score (VAS) pain score, the use of opioids, and other analgesic agents, hospital length of stay, limb range of motion (ROM), and speed of independent ambulation. |
